  • Program Overview

    The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Program builds on the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) curriculum. You will learn advanced patient assessment, communication skills and beginning advanced life support interventions. This course meets the educational requirements for licensure in Wisconsin. Prerequisite: Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician License and Professional level CPR certification. The Department of Health and Family Services may set other requirements.

    Orientation is mandatory.

    This program has a state mandated hours requirement.

    The National Registry of EMT's Practical Exam is offered on site at the end of your course.

    EMS student dress code is enforced at all times. Madison College EMS or Fire Program shirts are required.

    Health history documentation is required. Lab results and vaccination documentation are obtained from your healthcare provider by you.

    You must complete a Background Information Disclosure and Criminal History Check (CHC) prior to placement in the field. Information obtained from the CHC may affect your ability to secure a WI EMS Training Permit. Under no circumstances are students assigned to the clinical area until all requirements are satisfied.

    Travel to fieldwork sites is necessary and is your responsibility.

    Application for this program requires verification of licensure and CPR certification prior to enrollment. Please read and follow the instructions carefully. Incomplete registrations will not be considered.

    • Communicate clearly and professionally using verbal and nonverbal communication techniques.
    • Perform accurate scene safety and patient assessments.
    • Apply appropriate emergency medical and technical knowledge as required in emergency situations.
    • Apply safety and infection control practices to maintain personal and professional well-being and to ensure patient safety.
    • Manage emergency patient care and treatment appropriately within the scope of practice for an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic IV Technician.
    • Apply legal knowledge and medical ethics to all patient care situations by documenting accurate and complete patient records and reports and maintaining patient confidentiality.
    • Meet requirements for National Registry AEMT Certification exam.
