Madison College and Humility Inc. hosted the first-ever Juneteenth celebration in Baraboo on June 19 at Ochsner Park. Community friends gathered to honor African American heritage and celebrate the journey toward freedom and equality.
“Juneteenth celebrates our shared journey toward freedom, reminding us that community spirit thrives when we learn together, honoring the past while forging a brighter future, said Dr. Damira Grady, Madison College Vice President of College Culture and Climate.
Hundreds came to Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the United States, proclaimed on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas.
Event organizer Antowan Hallomon, pastor at Faith Works Ministries and leader of Humanity, Inc. emphasized the event's mission to unite the community, honor African American heritage, and celebrate the journey toward freedom and equality.
Community connects
Guests enjoyed a day of live music, poetry, food, games, interactive education, and vibrant community spirit.
“We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support we received for our 1st Juneteenth Celebration in Sauk County,” Hallomon said. "This special day was a huge success because of every one of you who contributed in countless ways.”
Madison College thanks the community members, artists, and vendors who contributed to the 1st Juneteenth Celebration in Sauk County.
“We were honored to be a part of this community celebration in support of our local partners,” said Madison College Dean of Regional Campuses Shawna Marquardt. “At the community college, we do our best work when we partner with our local communities and come together to learn and celebrate with each other.”
The Madison College Climate & Culture Department and Madison College Regional Campus collaborated with Humility Inc. and its community partners to make the firstever event a success and look foward to next year's celebration.
